Lisa talks with a student about her scenic art drawing

Lisa Borton is a Michigan-based theatrical designer who specializes in both costumes and scenic design. She is a designer at the University of Michigan-Flint and has been teaching there since 2012. Her MFA is from the University of Iowa (Iowa City, IA) and her BA from Hope College (Holland, MI.) Her childhood was largely comprised of making clothes for her Ken dolls (Barbie had all the cool clothes!) and making up stories about mermaids in her pool, which makes an excellent foundation for theatre. Let’s create something together.

Right Now:
Lisa is teaching online with the University of Michigan-Flint for the 2024-25 school year, and in person with Grand Valley State University. She'll be designing costumes for GVSU's upcoming season, including Romeo & Juliet, Intimate Apparel, Little Women (The Musical).

She is in her third year as a co-commissioner for the United States Institute of Theatre Technology's (USITT) Scene Design Commission.

Lisa has been diligently working on her 1906 Folk Victorian home, and

Lakeside Silver, her Michigan handcrafted jewelry business, keeps her plenty busy in her "free" time :)
